October 2010In a blink of an eye, our whole world can change from secure and comfortable to frightening and overwhelming. The death of a spouse can leave us not only grief stricken, but uncertain of the future. Support is paramount for our being able to regain a sense of order in our lives. Healing is measured by time, peace is measured by faith, and coping is measured by support. What lifts us up and gives us hope? Hugs from FRIENDS!
The Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home in Troy, Illinois and the Aebischer-Richeson Funeral Home in St. Jacob, Illinois sponsors a social support program for widows and widowers called "FRIENDS." The program began in April 2008 and offers monthly luncheons and day trips. The purpose of the program is to provide widowed individuals an opportunity to join in fellowship with others who have suffered a similar loss, but who are making great strides in enjoying happier tomorrows. FRIENDS is strictly a social support program and not a grief support program. Although there are no dues associated with the program, attendees do pay for their own lunches and trips. The monthly luncheons are kept upbeat with a strong emphasis placed on laughter. Entertainment is included at each luncheon and ranges from musicians to canine demonstrations. The monthly trips are normally within the greater St. Louis area and are of varied interests from Fabulous Fox Theatre presentations to an Amish settlement in Arthur, Illinois. Cruises, mystery trips, and occasional jaunts to New York City are also in the offering for the more adventurous members. The FRIENDS program is open to all widowed individuals regardless of their funeral home affiliation. Additional information can be provided by contacting 618-667-9123 or 618-644-2181. |
